The exhibition titled "Graphics of walls. The sketches of monumental murals" in the Tretyakov Gallery allows you to see how changing not only the preferences of architects and customers, but also the artistic eras.


120 years ago in Kiev was solemnly consecrated by St. Vladimir's Cathedral. One of the central images - upcoming full-length Mother of God with the blessing Christ Child. Work on the painting were invited several well-known Russian artists, the sketches which are now kept in the Tretyakov Gallery.

Initially, Victor Vasnetsov refused to paint St. Vladimir's Cathedral, but after one day at his dacha saw his wife with the baby-son in her arms, who held out her arms to him, changed his mind.


At the exhibition you can see the work of Mikhail Vrubel, who was also invited to the painting of the cathedral, but after a few sketches of the work removed.

In the Tretyakov Gallery collection of sketches stored and Mikhail Nesterov, who at the invitation of the author of the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy in Moscow architect Alexei Shchusev painted the main Cathedral of the Intercession.


"In recent years we have got it all here - Martha and Mary Convent. Deesis was purchased just a few years ago, and it was restored, it was a chewed roll, covered with mold, "- says the curator of the exhibition Irina Shumanova.


Marfo-Mariinsky Convent of Mercy, founded by Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, a unique example in the history of Russian monumental art - perhaps the only, when the authors - architect Shchusev and painter Nesterov created a unified artistic vision, to think everything from murals to the last stitch in the robe priests.
