On February 29, 2024, the New Jerusalem Museum will open the exhibition “Master Repin. Episodes from the life of a teacher and students". The project was created in the year of the 180th anniversary of Ilya Repin and is intended to look at him not only as the greatest author, but above all as a unique Master of scale - a mentor who formed a whole galaxy of outstanding artists who became the pride of the Russian school of painting.
The exhibition area of almost 2000 sq. m. included 110 works from the collections of 20 Russian museums and 4 private collections, including the New Jerusalem Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum. Pushkin, Russian Museum, Museum of Russian Impressionism, Yaroslavl Art Museum, Novgorod Museum-Reserve and others. The exhibition will present works by Ilya Repin and his students, including Valentin Serov, Boris Kustodiev, Philip Malyavin, Isaac Brodsky, Konstantin Somov, Zinaida Serebryakova, Igor Grabar, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva and others.
“Our exhibition is not just amazing painting, it is an emotional immersion and a journey along the artist’s path. An important role in it is played by the memories of Repin’s students, who tell very personal stories of observing the Master and communicating with him. They give a three-dimensional picture of characters and time, turning out to be surprisingly modern. The interweaving of paintings forms the internal dramaturgy of the exhibition, becoming more complex from the first “natural” hall to the third, where a real kaleidoscope of creative search and human relationships opens" - Ksenia Novokhatko, author of the concept, curator of the exhibition.
The exhibition will be open from February 29 to July 28, 2024.
