The Art Center of Contemporary Art in the building of HPP-2 will open its doors next year.
5 February 2019, Tuesday

The project is being implemented on the site of a cultural heritage site on Bolotnaya Embankment, which found both the collapse of the tsarist regime, the revolution, and Soviet Russia. The building of the former HPP-2, which was operated from 1903 to 2015, is familiar to residents and guests of the capital by its neo-Russian style with elements of Byzantine architecture and folk art.

In the building of the power station, reconstruction continues with preservation of the historical appearance, but by rethinking the internal space. The architect of the Museum is Renzo Piano, the founder of high-tech style and the author of the National Center for Arts and Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris. It is worth noting that this is the first work of an architect in Russia. The concept of the project was approved by the Architectural Council of Moscow and supported by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

The art center will open its doors next year. The total area of the future art center, together with underground parking will be 30,700 square meters. The project is a large multifunctional exhibition space with several rooms, an open area in front of the entrance to the art center, a birch grove of 600 seedlings, a canopy, art objects and recreation areas. It is planned that about 750,000 people will visit the center annually.

Milan Milivojevic, Project Manager of the Museum.HPP-2, told in more detail about the future of the museum, the challenges and difficulties that must be overcome:
“We are in a unique place where history is taking place right before our eyes. The former hydroelectric power station, built in 1903, is being transformed into a future museum of modern art. restaurants, galleries, training grounds. By the way, the place itself is completely unique - opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, on the banks of the river.
