An exhibition of artists-veterans who survived the blockade of Leningrad, opened in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg Union of Artists on Tuesday opened an exhibition dedicated to the exploits of besieged Leningrad. The exhibition presents paintings, sculptures, graphic works and works of decorative and applied art of the authors who survived the blockade.


The work of the Leningrad Union of Artists did not stop during the Great Patriotic War. As the chairman of the Committee on Culture of St. Petersburg Konstantin Sukhenko recalled at the opening ceremony, artists continued to create works, and in 1942 several exhibitions opened - "Leningrad in the days of the Patriotic War", poster exhibition, "Partisan Movement in the Leningrad Region".


"In 1942, an exhibition opened in these walls (union building). And this year we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the blockade, this is very important. Now there are still many who saw it, endured, many who were told about At that time, parents, grandmothers, grandfathers. It is important to transfer this memory to the next generations, ”noted Sukhenko.


According to the organizers of the exhibition, the authors of the works represented on it are blockade artists as well as artists who know the events of that time from the stories and memories of witnesses. “There are so many paintings dedicated to the blockade in the hall. War. Artists talk about it in terms of colors and artistic images. It’s important to bring more children here,” said Elena Tikhomirova, chairperson of the siege of Leningrad blockade, at the opening ceremony.


The exhibition includes paintings depicting the city during the blockade, and sketches on the theme of the memory of the war in modern life - elderly veterans on vacation in nature, children viewing military photographs and tunics with orders, still lifes with objects of besieged life - metal circles, a flask and a piece of bread. Among the works there is a picture, which depicts a loaf of bread on a gold background, - her artist Nadezhda Kasatkina called "More precious than gold."


The exhibition will continue until January 26, 2019.
