The monument to the Soviet and Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov was opened in Moscow, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and Russian Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky attended the solemn ceremony.


President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cultural Cooperation Mikhail Shvydkoi and other cultural and state figures also took part in the event.


The monument is located in the Aitmatov Square at the intersection of Pavlovskaya Street and Podolskoye Highway. His installation is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the writer. The monument's sculptor is Azamat Abdrakhmanov, the architect is Andrei Pavlov.


“Today is a big event - a monument to the great writer Chingiz Aitmatov appeared in Moscow. I want to thank the president of Kyrgyzstan, architects, benefactors, who made this monument appear. We all remember the great writer, a whole generation of Russians, Soviet people, were brought up on his works”, - said Sobyanin. The mayor noted that the opening of the monument became a symbol of the common history and friendship of Russia and Kyrgyzstan.


In turn, Medinsky stressed that Aitmatov is a classic of Kyrgyz and Russian literature. "This is the greatest sage, this is a lump, the creator of a separate unique genre within the framework of classical realism, imbued with mysticism, parables, the deepest knowledge of folk culture, world ethnos, legends. There was no second such writer in the 20th century," he said. In addition, Medinsky presented as a gift to the Kyrgyz side eight digitized films based on the works of Chingiz Aitmatov.


As the minister noted, the works of Aitmatov were very popular among readers. “I remember very well, when his new novel was published, we first read it in a magazine version, handing it through, because it was impossible to get a paper book. And to this day, Chingiz Aitmatov is very much loved and read here. This monument is a sign sincere love of the people, "Medina recalled and presented to the Kyrgyz side eight digitized films based on the works of Aitmatov.


Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov thanked the Russians for perpetuating the memory of the writer. "On behalf of the entire Kyrgyz people, I want to express my gratitude to all those who participated in the implementation of this project. Aitmatov is a classic not only of Kyrgyz, but also of Russian literature; he always said that two languages ​​are Kyrgyz and Russian are his two wings. Chingiz Aitmatov was born on December 12, 1928 in the Talas region of Kyrgyzstan. In 1958, the novel "Jamila" was published, which brought world fame to Aitmatov. Among the most famous works of the writer are “A Day Lasts a Century” (1980), “The White Ship” (1970), “The Block” (1986), “When the Mountains Fall (Eternal Bride)” (2006).


According to UNESCO, Aitmatov is one of the most widely read authors of modern times. He was called a classic of literature during his lifetime. Aitmatov's novels have been translated into more than 176 languages ​​and published in 128 countries with a circulation of more than 100 million copies. The writer died in 2008 in the clinic of the German Nuremberg, not half a year before his eightieth birthday.
