An exhibition "Masterpieces of painting and engravings of the Edo era" was opened in the Pushkin Museum
6 September 2018, Thursday

The exhibition "Masterpieces of painting and engravings of the Edo period" in the State Museum of Fine Arts. Pushkin will be one of the central events of the cross-year of Russia and Japan.

The Russian public will see for the first time such a large-scale exhibition, representing the entire palette of artistic trends of one of the most interesting periods in the history of Japanese art. The exhibition will feature 135 works by leading masters of Japanese painting and engraving of various traditional schools. Many of them have already become familiar in the history of art in Japan and very rarely leave the country.

Most of the work is brought from Japan and will be shown in Russia for the first time. Two works have the status of "National Treasure", nine have the status of "An especially valuable object of culture" and six - the status of "Particularly valuable art object".

Exhibition at the Pushkin Museum. A.S. Pushkin will be held in two stages: the first part of the works visitors will be able to see during the period from 4 to 30 September, and the second - from 3 to 28 October. The necessity for the rotation of works is explained by the fragility of the works: painting on paper and silk is a delicate material that requires strict conditions for transportation, storage and exhibiting. According to the standards adopted in Japan, works of this kind can not be presented in exhibition halls for more than four weeks. In fact, the audience will see two completely different exhibitions. Things from the first part will be replaced by works of the same high artistic level.

Curators of the exhibition: Hirooshi Tadzawa, Head of the Department of Scientific Curatorial Studies, Tokyo National Museum; Ainura Yusupova, Leading Researcher, Graphics Department, Pushkin Museum im. A.S. Pushkin.

04/09/2018 - 10/28/2018.
