WITH SOUL AND HIGH THOUGHTS
Windows of a house are like eyes. Window-painting is a modern trend of the church painting, having its roots in the ancient Russian icon-painting. Its founder is the Blagoveshchensk artist Alexander Tikhomirov, who lived and studied in Moscow, in Stroganov School, faculty of monumental-decorative painting, G.M. Korzhev's studio.
But in the eighties he suddenly decided to leave for the Far East. That time indisposed one to icon-painting. However an artist as a creative person, born in an Orthodox country, bears within himself rudiments of Orthodox culture. Someone does it unconsciously, someone subconsciously, and Tikhomirov did it consciously. That is why his basic activity since 1984 was mosaic, a technique in which he performed his works for numerous social and cultural objects in the Far East. Beginning from mosaics in secular establishments, he has purposefully come to solemnity of the church mosaic, applied to religious art of icon-painting, which he brightly actualised in the original form of window-painting. This term belongs to the artist.
The best traditions of Russian icon-painting with its sophistication and internal intimacy, are reincarnated with dignity in the new trend ofthc modern religious art. The epoch of postmodernism allowed Soviet artists to assimilate rather easily traditions of Orthodox art in its new forms. One of such original forms is the art of window-painting. Use of the wood texture and superannuated window shutters that have accu-nulated the energy of souls of those who lived in the house is McxanderTikhomirov's artistic invention.
Rather serious study of traditions of the Orthodox icon with its canonicity, musicality and rhythmic clarity spirituali-les Tikhomirov's works. As you know, tradition does not inhibit display of creative spirit, especially in the religious art. The diversity of expressive means of Russian icon-painting breaks the notion of canon as a certain embodiment of principles of artistic mimesis. How many centuries worked icon-painters in the same canon, and how many distinctions there are in artistic devices of such titans as Panselin, Feofan the Greek and Andrey Rublev!
That is why the birth of a new and, undoubtedly, expressional artistic trend is an obligate process. Tlie end of the weary century and entire millennium, and then, instead of another "art" here comes an original, grown on Russian Orthodox soil, independent religious artistic trend.
There is no house without a window, man willioul lace. icon without saint. Oneol 'AlexandcrTikhoniirov'se.'.liibiliiw was titled "The windows of Russia." This is a very meani title. It comprehends the concept of Holy Russia and source of everything sacred in Russia: the Orthodox faun. Windows are the eyes of the house.
In March 1999 an exhibition titled "Keep the Onhoddi Faith" was held in the museum of Christ the Saviour's in Moscow, timed to the anniversary of Patriarch ol К Alexis 11, where the works of Alexander Tikhomirov atliacu^l a special attention. Now they are on their way to Jerusalem,' an international exhibition of the Orthodox an. So, ihera from Holy Russia to Holy Land is paved.
