The State Museum of Fine Arts named after Pushkin (Pushkin Museum) will create a collection of media art, among the first acquisitions will include the works of Jonas Mekas, Marianne Heske and the trilogy of the Russian art group "Provmyz", said the museum's head Marina Loshak.
According to Loshak, the museum in recent times has rather intensely demonstrated the desire to become more alive, so that it was not just a "place of walks along the walls," but a space for creative dialogue.
"All these actions underscored the need to create a collection with media art in order to make a step and acquire it as a format of use and an opportunity to communicate with colleagues from other institutions. This is a new tool for carrying out a dialogue between the world and art," said Loshak.
The first acquisitions will be the video installations of Jonas Mekas and Gary Hill from the USA, the video of Marianna Heske from Norway, and the trilogy of the Russian art group Provmyzia Despair, Vivacity and Eternity.
Works of the latter can be seen at the exhibition on February 27. The exhibition will open with the premiere of the artists' performance "Post-mortem Mohography", which was created specifically for the Pushkinsky space, the head of the cinema and media art department of the museum, Olga Shishko, specified.
The collection will include works created on the basis of the collection of the museum, as well as projects that comprehend classical art with the help of the latest technologies. At the same time, the focus will be on works that, in the opinion of the museum, expand the vision and offer new formats of interaction with reality. In addition, attention will be paid to works that are iconic for the development of media art, explains the press service.
