In 1994, the legendary collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig presented the Russian Museum with a collection of works by outstanding artists of the second half of the twentieth century. This gift became the basis for the permanent exhibition "Ludwig Museum in the Russian Museum", which opened to the public on March 10, 1995 in the halls of the Marble Palace. According to the agreements, the new institution received a special status of the "museum in the museum". The exposition of the Ludwig Museum in the Russian Museum is by far the only major collection of contemporary contemporary art in Russia from the postwar period to the beginning of the 21st century. The collection of the Ludwig Museum also includes works by Russian contemporary art stars.

Under the terms of the contract with the couple, Ludwig continues to constantly replenish the collection of the "Ludwig Museum in the Russian Museum". New works enter the collection in two ways: they are gifts from foreign and domestic artists (or their heirs) participating in the intensively developing exhibition program of the Ludwig Museum in the Russian Museum, as well as acquisitions, mainly provided by the Ludwig Foundation. Today the composition of the collection includes works by 150 authors.

The collection collected by Ludwig's spouses includes fine examples of antiquity, medieval, baroque and rococo, the art of pre-Columbian America, Africa, China and India, but it was best known for the works of avant-garde artists, the works of Pablo Picasso, the objects of American pop art and the collection of contemporary art of Ludwig began) and works of German neo-expressionism.

In 1976, Peter and Irena Ludwig first presented 300 works from their collection to the city of Cologne, opening the first Ludwig Museum in it. Today, works from the Ludwig family collection are presented in many world museums and funds bearing their name. Thanks to his impeccable taste, his subtle instincts, his interest in contemporary art, his fearlessness and his ability to appreciate the artist's creative prospects long before he was universally recognized, the Ludwig couple created an impressive collection and contributed to the advancement of contemporary art, including the works of Russian avant-gardists and non-conformists , on the world art scene.

The list of works donated to the Russian Museum was determined by the Ludwig family together with the museum's representatives. The collection, intended for the Russian Museum, reflects the main artistic directions and strategies, introducing the viewer to the landmark works of pop art (Roy Lichtenstein's Ruins, Andy Warhol's Portrait of P. Ludwig, Klas Oldenburg's Banana Ice Cream on Tasting) and "hyperrealism" (Rafa Goings's "Snack"), German neo-expressionism ("Bottle and Eagle" by Georg Baselitz, "Style: Eurydice" by Marcus Lupertz, "Chairs" by Jörg Immendorf, "The Great Iron Fist of Germany" by Anselm Kiefer) and conceptual art »And Kabakov's works, the works of Sergei Mironenko, the group Medgermenevtika).

In addition, the collection demonstrates the development of the latest trends, types and genres, methods and technologies in contemporary art: "Man in space Y 2589394" Jonathan Borofsky - painting, painted on a canvas of unconventional form, "Monica" by Tom Wesselmann - a monumental drawing made of steel, made with the help of a laser, Ilya Makarevich's "Cabinet of Ilya" is an assemblage combining real household items (so-called "found objects") and painting.

Works from the "Ludwig Museum in the Russian Museum" are constantly participating in major international projects around the world. In 2014, the Russian Museum organized a large-scale demonstration of this meeting in Brazil: an exhibition at the Cultural Center of the Bank of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro ranked second in the world in attendance: for two months it was watched by 530,088 people, and in only three cities the exhibition visited more than one million viewers.
