The exhibition of Japanese prints of the XVIII-XIX centuries is held in Nizhny Novgorod. In the exposition - about 100 works. The subjects are very different: landscapes, still lifes, scenes of the Kabuki Theater and not only. The exhibition is timed to coincide with the cross-cultural year of Japan and Russia. This exposition gives the public a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the masterpieces of such masters as Suzuki Harunobu, Katsushika Hokusai, Hishikawa Moronobu.
"This exhibition presents various works of Japanese graphics for nearly three centuries, which is interesting in that each room is presented as a separate topic, which Japan is known to the whole world," curator of the exhibition of Japanese engraving "Ukiyo-E. History of Japanese engraving" Peter Baranov .
Ukiyo-e style is the name of the genre of Japanese painting, the main theme of which are the joys of everyday life. Originally the concept of "ukiyo" came from Japanese Buddhism and was defined as the impermanence of worldly existence. A kind of Buddhist analogue of the biblical teaching "vanity and decay."
The exhibition presents 91 works done in the woodcut technique - printing from wooden blocks. In addition, engravings are accompanied by three-dimensional objects of traditional Japanese life - Netsuke, kimono and even tsuba - this is the samurai's cold steel weapon.
