In October 2018 marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of Henry Ippolitovich Semiradsky (1843-1902), a graduate of the Petersburg Academy of Arts and one of the most outstanding representatives of late European academicism.

The creative path of the master was closely connected with Rome, whose appearance, history and unique artistic atmosphere invariably attracted masters from different countries. The exhibition presents for the first time in a single exposition about 125 works by Semiradsky and his contemporaries - Russian painters and sculptors of the academic direction who worked in the "eternal city" in the second half of the XIX - beginning of the XX centuries: Mark Antokolsky, Stepan Bakalovich, Vladimir Beklemishev, Mikhail Botkin, Fedor Bronnikov, Nikolai Laveretsky, Alexander Rizzoni, Alexander and Pavel Svedomsky, Vasily Smirnov, Pavel Chistyakov and others. The audience will see bright examples of landscape, everyday, portrait and historical genres that have become classics of Russian art.

The most large-scale section of the exhibition, dedicated to the work of "the main prisoner of beauty of the XIX century" Henryk Semiradsky, will include not only the famous canvases of the artist from the collections of the Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery, but also less famous works from provincial and private collections.

For the first time in Russia, under one roof, you can see all the master paintings of the master, from whose work the collection of the Russian Museum began. It was by buying the painting "Fryn at the Feast of Poseidon in Eleusine" at the personal exhibition of Heinrich Semiradsky at the Academy of Arts, that Emperor Alexander III first announced his intention to create a museum of Russian art in St. Petersburg.
