A large-scale retrospective of the Italian artist, who left a notable mark in the art of the XX century, Giorgio Morandi opens in the State Museum of Fine Arts named after Pushkin.


The first exhibition of the artist's works was held in the museum in 1973. More than 40 years after the exhibition, the museum holds a retrospective of the work of Morandi, one of the leading artists of Italy of the twentieth century and a landmark figure of modern European painting.

"We are opening an exhibition of almost my favorite artist, it's a gift to myself ... He was already in our museum as a guest, and it was at a time when no one else could dream of seeing Morandi in Russia.This is the fate of our museum that from time to time Here there are some magic things, "- said the museum director Marina Loshak at the opening day of the exhibition.


According to her, the Italian artist, due to his uniqueness, the enormous scale of his talent, is in demand at any time.


The exhibition shows about 70 paintings and watercolors, with sufficient completeness characterizing the stages of the creative path of the master - from avant-garde metaphysical compositions to the latest emotionally excited works that differ in rigor and imaginative depth. Throughout his life, the artist remained faithful to two genres - a still-life and a landscape, depicting the objective world and nature that surrounded him.


In addition, the exhibition shows some items from the workshop of Morandi, provided by the Association of Museums of Bologna. This section is accompanied by photographs of the artist and the studio of Morandi.
