Tretyakov Gallery opened to a wide audience the exhibition of one of the most popular Russian artists - Ivan Aivazovsky, it presents more than 200 exhibits from 17 museums and of six private collections.

 

Aivazovsky lived long lives almost a century. His career he began under the influence of German idealist philosophy in the late romanticism and long remained faithful to this line, not paying attention to a fundamental change in the aesthetic doctrine in the middle of the XIX century. By the end of the XIX century Aivazovsky became relevant again for many, being able to anticipate the search for symbolist artists.

 

However, loud glory lifetime, a great number of paintings by the artist played with a cruel joke. The audience did not cease to love Aivazovsky, but criticism sated his work, the artist turned away from both the "old" does not meet the demands of the dynamic of the twentieth century, putting on his label products "salon and business".

 

As noted in the Tretyakov Gallery, the museum decided to take a fresh look at Aivazovsky and change the attitude to his heritage, open to fans in his works new meanings, to overcome the snobbery against him in the professional community.

 

"It so happened that Ivan Aivazovsky was about 100 lifetime personal exhibitions, but until now it has so popular among the general public and among the artist's collectors did not have any large-scale retrospective at the State Tretyakov Gallery", - he told reporters director of the museum Zelfira Tregulova.

According to her, this exhibition is preceded by the year 2017, when the world will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Aivazovsky. "We really tried to think deeply and who was also Ivan Aivazovsky, of its place in the history of Russian and European art, what it means and what it tells us the art that it is interesting to us today", - said the director.

 

Tregulova noted that of the six thousand paintings, which were created by the artist, the exhibition presents about 120, most significant and famous.
